Fitzgerald Abbott & Beardsley Earns Green Business Certification
(Oakland, CA) October 9, 2009 - Oakland, CA-based law firm, Fitzgerald Abbott & Beardsley LLP (FAB), today announced that it has been named a Certified Green Business by the Alameda County Green Business Program (www.greenbiz.ca.gov/). FAB is one of only five law firms in Alameda County to have achieved this honor.
The Alameda County Green Business program evaluates businesses to determine if they meet the high standards of environmental performance set forth by the program. FAB's compliance with environmental regulations and the actions the firm has taken over the past twelve months to conserve resources, prevent pollution, minimize waste, and reduce its carbon footprint qualified the firm for certification. Specific activities the firm has undertaken include:
- Adopting a written "green" purchasing policy
- Establishing a "green team" to help guide the firm's efforts
- Assisting other businesses in learning about the Green Business Program and encouraging enrollment
- Installing low-flow faucet aerators
- Eliminating use of individual water bottles and styrofoam
- Purchasing paper with at least 30% and paper towels with at least 35% post - consumer content
Historically, law firms have been identified as heavy users of paper. The American Bar Association estimates that individual attorneys use about 100,000 sheets of paper per year. Since joining the Green Business program, Fitzgerald Abbott & Beardsley estimates that it has cut down on paper usage by twenty-five percent.
